Washing Wool Pillow

The bed pillow should be washed every two to six months. For the polyester filling, the washing process is easy. Washing the high-end pillow like down, wool, organic cotton isn't easy like others.  Here are some recommendations for washing the wool pillow.

Since wool fiber is an excellent choice for pillows because of its natural content, temperature regulating ability and ability to maintain its shape for long time, they need extra care. They cannot be washed with other loads as normal cycle. While we are working on making the wool pillows robust for home washing, this research is in progress. Until then it is recommended to wash wool pillows with extra precautions.

Basically, wool fibers will shrink and felt in a normal wash cycle. This phenomenon is known as wool felting. Hot water and hot drying accelerate this process making the fibers turn lumpy. Our eco wool fiber is made to reduce felting using specialized enzymes to wash off the wool scales and surface materials. This makes the pillows washable.  Here are some guidelines to follow for washable wool pillows.

  • Use large commercial size washer such as 60 lbs or more. This allows ease in water flow while preventing fiber lumping. Select delicate wash cycle with cold wash in a front loading machine.
  • Use low temperature drying in large dryer. Never use a hot dryer or a small home dryer. It will easily ruin the pillow. Ensure that the pillows are tumbling all the time without being stagnant at one position due to its size or other articles obstructing its movement.  Air must circulate in the dryer and not hit the same region of the pillow. Preferably do not attempt to dry more than two pillows at a time, and do not run mixed loads.
  • The other alternatives is to use pillowcases for frequent washing or even dual covers when higher soiling is expected. Wool pillow also be spot cleaning and dry clean.
  • If you frequently wash pillows, consider alternative filling such as down alternative fiber or similar synthetic fiber with organic covers.

With some extra care wool pillows are excellent choice. It helps in deep sound and healthy sleep without the concern about the chemicals. They offer excellent support and are naturally flame retardant making them free from toxic fire retardants. Way to go for organic and natural products community.
